Outstate Members (outside of the 7 county Metro)
The Emerald Society would like to encourage members outside of the 7 county Metro area to coordinate meetings in your areas. Jason Fairborn has done a great job the last several years organizing the New Ulm “Schells” meeting, and we would like other areas to do the same. The ES Board will assist with planning, funds, and support, but the ideas need to come from you! If there is a local charity that you would like to meeting to support, let us know and we can help with the plans! This is truly a state wide organization and we want to continue that mission!
Monthly Meetings
Every 3rd Wednesday of the month the Emerald Society holds meetings at O'Gara’s in St. Paul, at 1930 hrs. These meetings are open to ANY MEMBER, and much of the business is discussed during this time. Please show up, cast your vote, bring new ideas, and meet the board! Also if you would like to see a meeting held in your part of town, or the state, please let the board know, through the website, and that can be arranged!!

Members Night 2010
On February 16th, 2010, The Emerald Society of Minnesota gathered in The Garage at O'Garas, in St. Paul, to host the 2010 Members Night. We were entertained by the Emerald Society Pipe Band (www.mppb.org) and the Irish rock sensation, The Wild Colonial Bhoys (www.wildcolonialbhoys.com). We would like to thank both, and Dan O'Gara, for a great night and great tunes!

Our membership grew, and many renewed their dues that night. The room was full, and the donated beer, from Schell’s, was flowing. We want to thank everyone who came out that night to share a beer with us and donate through the raffle, silent auction, shamrock sales, and merchandise. We also need to thank Liam Scott, who provided the Jameson Girls that passed out the Jameson samples throughout the night. For many this is a great opportunity to meet with other officers, deputies, and troopers from around the state. We are happy to host this social gathering and look forward to many more attending in 2011. Please bring your family, friends who support our cause, and co-workers!

If you would like to help with this event in the future, or would like to offer suggestions please contact a board member through the website.

St Patrick’s Day 2010

On March 17th, 2010, Close to 80 Uniformed Officers and Family marched in the 43rd St Patrick’s Day Parade. After Mass at the Cathedral we were bused to the parade start where others were gathering to meet us. The parade was kicked off, led by the St Paul Police Honor Guard and the St Paul Police Marching Band. Being the usual star of the show we let several group pass in front of us to allow for everyone’s suspense and expectations to build. Then, with the raise of Emerald Society President McCabe’s hand we started. The St Paul Police Motor Unit roared to life, 7 motorcycles in total, riding side by side, led the way, They were followed by the Emerald Society Banner and Honor Guard. They were then followed by the Emerald Society Pipe Band (The Minnesota Police Pipe Band), who were followed by the ranks of uniformed Officers, Deputies, and Troopers from all over the state.

The crowd’s reactions were outstanding, many of them shouting, “we love Irish cops!” There were record thousands in attendance to this year’s parade, held on a Wednesday at noon! The weather was brilliant and everyone’s excitement was shared.

If you missed this year’s events, we are sorry. Please make every effort to attend in 2011.

Ron Ryan Jr. Charitable Golf
It's time once again to dust off your clubs and start warming up for the 2010 golf tournament. This year’s event will be held on September 13th, the Monday after Labor Day. Last year’s event raised over $4000.00. We would like to thank our players and hole sponsors for their generous support. The 2009 tournament was won by a foursome that has won several times in past years. Jim Anderson, Steve Funk, Pat Clark and Mike Jerde took home trophies. As always everyone had a great time and we made a few bucks for our charities.
Schell’s
150 Anniversary
This September Schell’s Brewery in New Ulm Minnesota celebrates its 150 year Anniversary. To commemorate this huge occasion they are having an Oktoberfest/Anniversary celebration on September 17th & 18th. While we all know that Schell’s & Oktoberfest is German focused, this is also a huge Minnesota event as well. The owners of Schell’s, Ted and Jody Marti, are generous supporters of the Emerald Society, the Minnesota Police Pipe Band, and Police Organizations in general. In 2009 the Emerald Society made Ted and Jody Honorary Members to show our gratitude for their tremendous support.
For years, the New Ulm PD has been in exchange with a Police Department in Germany, and this year many of those German Officers who have worked in New Ulm over the years are coming back to show their support for Schell’s. They will be in attendance at this year’s events. The Emerald Society and Officers from the New Ulm Police department have been in close contact over the last few weeks ironing out details about this year’s activities.
For the official information please go to Schell’s website: www.schellsbrewery.com.
Please keep an eye out of the ES website for our details as they are made! If you have any desire to help with the event please contact a board member through the website.
2009 ESM Charity Dinner

For those of you who were unable to attend this year’s Charity Dinner, you missed a fun time. We had a nice turn out and everyone enjoyed good food and great music. We had a nice silent auction again this year and we raised over $800.00. The Minnesota Police Pipe Band played a set right before the short program, in which we presented checks to our charities. This year’s band was the newly reformed Tim Malloys and they went on right after the short program and the music was great.
Charitable Giving 2009
At the 2009 Charity Dinner, the Emerald Society disbursed it’s charitable giving for 2009. The following were the selected charities and amounts:

Your hard work, donations, and support help fund these donations and make our outreach possible. Thank you to everyone, and please know that our organization is so much more than just a social society. We are the top donors to many of these charities!
Loyal Servant Award

At the 2009 Emerald Society Charity Dinner, member Layne Lodmell was award the Emerald Society of Minnesota Loyal Servant Award. Layne is a veteran Police Officer of the St Paul Police Department. He currently serves in the crime lab, on the MPPOA Board, and the St Paul Police Federation Board. For a great number of years Layne has served the Emerald Society as our representative in Washington DC to the National Conference of Law Enforcement Emerald Societies (NCLEES). For those of you who have been in DC during National Police Week, and have met with Layne or been lucky enough to be traveling with Layne, you know that his work in DC is so much more than representing the Emerald Society and the St Paul Police Federation. For those who have been to the memorial you know it’s importance and moving power. It is an everlasting tribute for the families, friends, and co-workers of those heroes whose names adorn the wall. Layne takes it upon himself to coordinate family’s and friend’s trip to the wall so they can focus on memories rather than the trip stressors. For this sacrifice, and his years of service to the Emerald Society, we chose to not only honor Layne, but award him with his own words, The Loyal Servant Award. We only hope that Officers for years to come rise to the challenge and receive this honor.
